BOYS' COW JUDGING.

JUDGE'S REPORT. Mr. Frank Randford, the judge of the boys' cow judging competition, in forwarding his awards has furnished the following report:— My task in allotting the prizes has been no light one. The work on the whole was very good and reflects great credit on those responsible for the boys' tuition. The great difllculty as far as I was concerned was to como to a decltson as to which boy had corresponded most nearly In his marks to my own, and had at the same time shown by his scoring that he had intelligently appreciated the value of his own comments by correspondingly adding or substracting points. As no boy was outstanding throughout, I have placed first in order of merit, those boys whose awards, in my opinion, showed the best judgment In the main essentials. For instance I consider that tho boy who notices that the cow being judged Is thick through the shoulder blades thus falling away behind, and giving an Impression of lack of girth. Is doing better work than the lad who overlooks this, but notices that the cow's horns are a trifle heavy, or that she has warts on her teats. The great drawback In a class like this, as, far as the judge Is concerned, is that, while he is well aware of the fact that there Is 1 quite a few years' difference between the ages of different competitors, he is not supI posed to make any allowance for this, hut ! has to judgo the boy of 13 by the same ; standard as the lad of 17. In conclusion I would like to compliment the Taranakl Agricultural Society on the ■ great improvement made In the arrangements for the boys' judging class tills year. The ring was splendid and the score card a distinct advance on last year's. The splendid entry received and the interest.shown by the competitors augurs well for the future, and J wish tho society every success in Its endeavors to enducatc and Interest the growing youth of the district in the judging of dairy cattle. j PRIZE AWARDS. !
