POLITICAL DEADLOCK.
THE SOUTH AFRICAN ELECTIONS. THE LATEST RETURNS. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. 0 Capetown, March 15. The final results of the election show the following results: — Unionists 25 South African Party 40 Nationalists 43 Labor 21 Independents 3 These figures are exclusive of Bloemfontein South and Wetbank, where new elections, are being held. Much significance is attached to an article in Onsland, a Government organ, which states that the only logical consequence of the decision of the electors is that General Smuts should give Mr. Herttog an opportunity of taking the responsibility of the government of the Union on his own shoulders, seeing that he has more followers than the leader of any other single party. Then at least the political atmosphere would be cleared with or without political thunderstorms. Mr. Ross, chairman of the Transvaal Nationalist Party, in a manifesto, says that independence is no temporary matter or election cry to be thrown aside, « but something holy and precious, which only traitors could renounce.—Aus.-N.Z.
