General Sir W. R. Birdwood visits NTew Zealand shortly (savs a cable from Sydney). Mr. R. R. Dawson, engineer to the Wanganui County Council, has tendered his resignation in order io take over a business which he hais acquired at Raetihi. Major Ernest S. Hurston, of Napier, hate of the 9th (Hawke's Bay) Regiment with the Expeditionary Force, has been repeated through Defence Headquarters orders to the 11th Regiment (Taranaki Kifies). He has also been promoted to. the rank of major in the Territorial Forces. A very interesting wedding took place at tiie Presbyterian Church, Hawera, on Wednesday, 10th March, (reports the Star) when _ Miss Isabel Alice (Isa) Grant, of Taiporoheaui, was married to Mr. Ernest Gustave Paterson, fifth son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Paterson, of Collins street, Hawfra. The Rev. H. B. Gray performed the ceremony, and Miss Crabb officiated at the organ. The death occurred last week of Mr. 0. S. Davis, a well-known resident of the Wanganui district. He started farming as a cadet at Westmere (the Chronicle reports), but when the Maori War broke out he joined up with, and was the youngest man in, Finnimore's troops, Wanganui Cavalrv Volunteers during ISGS and 18(19, and was too of the party sent in pursuit of Te Kooti. He was the youngest of four brothers under arms at the same time, the surviving ones "being Mr. Henrv Inman Davis (of Waitihi), Mr RoWrt Taylor and Mr. William Hudson Davis (both of Wanganui). At, the age of 2! he went to Australia, but returned to Wanganui about twelve years ago with the intention of settling" down. Mr. R.'H. Nolan, who arrived back in New Zealand by the Athenie recently, has received the following message from the King: "Ruckintrham Palace, R. H. Nolan, C.B.E. (10 Russell Square,—The King has heard with much regret of your serious illness, which His Majesty fears has been caused by your untiring and unremitting work with the establishment and ndministration of the NZ. Soldiers' Club, for which the King knows that you have earned the lasting gratitude of all New Zealand soldiers. His Majesty earnestly trusts that yon may be restored to health.—Standfordham." -Star. Colonel Allan Bell (president of the Kaitaia Chamber of Commerce) and Mr. L. M. Lane, (member of the Whangaroa County Council) interviewed members of the Government on Tuesday at Wellington, regarding some of the needs of the North Auckland district. They urged the importance of early completion of the Main Trunk railwav from the present railhead at Okaihau to Awanui, with a branch line from Whangaroa. They suggested that a contract should be let for thu. whole work with a time limit, or alternatively that the people of the district should be allowed to form a company with a capital of £2,000,000 to complete the Main Trunk line, with proper safeguards for the public as to rates, and with potato right of.resumption on a compensation ba«is. The Minister of Public Works (Sir William Eraser) said that as a question of policy affecting the whole Dominion was involved, he would have to put this scheme before Cabinet.
