STUDY OF ECONOMICS.
EXCOURAGEMEXT IN NEW ZEALAXIX SCHOLARSHIP AT OTACO. By Telegraph.—rress Association. ' Dunedin, Last Xight. The long list of donations which have been rveoived from time to time for the Otago University was added to to-crnv when Sir Robert. Stout wrote to (he University stating 1 hat It? had forwarded to (lie Secretary for the Treasury an assignment of .£."((11) worth of inscribed aioek for the establishment, of a scholarship in economics. In tho course of a covering letter. Sir Robert Stout says: "1 wish that this sum, with (lie gift the Government will f,"ve, should be set aside for a scholarship or prize for the person who obtains the highest marks in first class honors in economics for ihe year in the Otago University without distinction of sex. of class, of race, or of creed. I also ihink it would be wise to set aside oneicith of the income each year lo be lo the capital sum so thet in f'.iV.:.? rears if (lie interest falls (he amount will lie kepi up to al all events vbat ii is at present, and the accumulation. if continued for many years, may enable a second scholarship to be granted. In my opinion the study of economics should be encouraged. It. is | the one thing that is needed in Xew I Zealand."
