tfARANAKI BRANCH. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Taranakl branch of the New Zealand Institute was held on Saturday. The president (Mr. \V. A. Curtels, Stratford) presided over an attendance of about twelve members. Several ojwlogies for absence were received. ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report read by tho secretary stated, among other tilings, that tho membership was now 2!ii with 7 honorary members, representing about 90 per cent of the teachers. Five meetings were held during the year, which were fairly well attended, but legret was expressed that no papers on educational .matters lmd been read 'before the Institute during the year. 'The fact, that there had been no legal cases for the executive fn deal with during the .year. sowed that the relations between teachers and committees were very satisfactory and of a harmonious nature. Hope was eipressed that during the coming session of Parliament the much needed legislation would be passed to bring tho system or education thoroughly up-to-date. Tho finances of the branch were said to be in a flourishing state. The credit brlnneowlth which the year began (£56 14s 2d) had' increased to £OB lis 9d. At the teginning of the year the executive was able to reduce the annual subscription to 15s, the minimum allowed by the N f <O.l. The president extended a hearty wMrome to Mr. J. C. Kvison, formerly of Tell Block, and now of Nine Island. Congratulations were extended to Messrs. Brown (Ngrere) and Henderson (Hawera) on gaining "B" Certificates, and to all other teachers who had been successful In tho recent, examinations. Misses Laird (Matapu), Andrews (Fltzroy) And Mr. Howarth (organising teacher) reported on the conference of the Institute to which they were tho delegates *
CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence wa3 road as follows: In reply to representations of the Institute the Assistant-Director of Education (Mr John Caughley) stated that the matter of the establishment of a Teachers' Training College In New Plymouth would be brought beforo the next meeting of the Council ot Education. An amendment of the Act would, however, be necessary before such it college could be agreed to, and the lack of a university at New Plymouth would be regarded as a serious obstacle to the • establishment of a college in that centre.
The secretary of the N Z.E.I. Intimated that the Minister had informed him that as regards manual training teaehors and teachers In Technical High Schools, the Education Boards had been authorised to pay increases of salaries for the current year similar to those paid to primary school teachers, and that interim payments of increased grants and capitation, are being made for that purpose. NEW MEMBERS. The following were elected membersMisses Coyne (Makahu), Hyndman (Dudley), Messrs. C. A. MeKlnnoy {organising tencher), A. Hayes . (Waltaanea), 11. : \V. Loch (Tuna) and Short (Matau). TEACHERS' CERTIFICATES. The question of subjects required for teachers' certificates wits dealt with by Mr Howarth, and on Ills motion the following resolutions were carried:— (1) That no practical certificate be required in "C" subjects for any subject already passed in "D." (2) That one subject of tho B.A. or B.Sc. subjects for "R" be education or mental and moral philosophy. (3) That Ist and 2nd class honors in education be required for "A" Certificate. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr. W. A. Curtels; vicepresidents, Mr. Sims and Miss Laird; secretary and treasurer, Mr. R. L. Mcllroy; executive, Misses Andrews and Slatterv.' and Messrs. Brown, J. \V. Thomas, I). P. Evans, 0. ,T. Howarth, and T. Thomas; auditor, Mr 0 Johnson. GENERAL. The socretary reported that the Honors Board, authorised last year, to commemorate the services of Taranalct teachers in the lale war. was near completion and would be ready at an early date. It was decided to urge on the Department that organising teachers should participate, in accordance with their grading, in the increases in salaries recently granted to teachers.
