THE ENTERTAINMENT OF VISITORS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, March 11. Sir Harry Brittain presided over a meeting of of the House of Commons and representatives of the Dominions and American institutions, including the Royal Colonial Institute and the Overseas Club, when it was decided to form a Hospitality League in view of the influx of visitors from overseas this summer. It is anticipated that 500,000 will arrive. A hundred thousand passports to Great Britain have already been applied for in New York, 50,000 in Canada, and 40,000 in Australia. The league will be linked up with hotels and intends also to arrange accommodation in private houses sufficient for the greatest emergency.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
STRAP-lIANGKRS BARREDLondon, March 11. The London General Omnibus Company, owing to the return of ex-sol-diers, has been obliged to dismiss 50(1 conductors. The union, as a reprisal, has decided not to allow any straphanging. After Tuesday all passengers must be seated.
INCOME-TAX COMMISSION REPORT, London, March 11.
The Daily Express states that the Income-tax' Commission's report favors discrimination against bachelors by increasing the exemption allowance for a wife to £IOO, the new exemption levels being £.150 and £250, also additional allowances for children.
The tax scales show light reductions on incomes under £2OO, except in the case of unearned incomes. There arc stiff increases on incomes over £2OOO, particularly unearned incomes. It is recommended that the super-tax should be increased.
The report says that the additional exemption for the wife should be conditional on assessing the wife's ineome with the husband's.
