"A MATTER FOR REGRET." Masterton, March 9The alleged "peppery" nature of some of the books in the Masterton public library was brought up by Councillor Burridge at a meeting of the Masterton Borough Council last night. The Mayor stated that it was a matter for regret that a request should be made for a certain class of book to he supplied at the library. There was no reflection at all upon the librarian, who was doing excellent work. A work of a reputable writer may contain matter which may be considered all right until closely studied. If a book of this character is sought after by the public the librarian is helpless in the matter unless she is made censor. It was certainly unfortunate that sucli works should be sought after. Councillor Candy: The librarian is not to blame. We have no case before us. What are we discussing? The books of the kind referred to can be obtained in any bookseller's shop in Masterton. No councillor has read the book objected to. After further discussion the Mayor stated that the book in question had been withdrawn from the library. •The matter then dropped.
