NORTH v. SOUTH TARANAKI. WIN FOR NORTH ON FIRST INNINGS. A representative eleven from North Taranaki went to Hawera yesterdßj - , where they defeated the South Taranakl team by sixteen, runs on the flrst innings. Neither team waa up to full strength, North Taranakl being without the servicei of Heskett, Johnson, Lash, Hasell, Robertson, Weston and Bottrill j whilst South Taranakl were without McCarthy and Dr. Maunsell. The weather conditions were Ideal. The wicket was far from perfect, being rather bumpy, and after recent rains played rather slow. The outfield was rough, boundaries being dlfflcnlt to obtain.

The best batting for North Taranakl w»» done by Egglestone', Clarke, Hughes, Osborne and P. Sarten, and for South Taranakl by Beechey, Penny, and Pratt. South Taraankl won the toss and sent North Taranakl to the wickets, Bewley and opening to the bawling of Penny front the north end and Worrall. Egglestone signalised the change by scoring a' boundary and a four off his one, having a life through Lynskey and Marsh both going for a catch, and colliding. Stalnton fell to one from Beechey, which kept low. This partnership had produced 38, and proved a valuable stand, 100—9—5. Dlnnlss followed, and off the flrst ball he received two byes were run. Next over, after scoring one, he was caught out by Pratt. 105—10—1. Egglestone was given an ovation for his score of 43 not out. The Innings lasted just over an hour and a half.

SOUTH TARANAKI'S REPLY. For South Taranakl Nellson and Penny opened against the bowling of Hughes and Osborne. Nellson, after scoring five runs, was neatly bowled by Osborne In his first over. 7—l—s. Ho was replaced by Beechey who commenced to score freely, getting In some good hits. In Dlnnlss' first over Penny was caught by Hughes. 42—2—18. Marfth took his place. Beechey landed a six off Dlnnlss, getting well over the boundary, and followed with a single, making the total at the luncheon adjournement 51 for two wickets. After the adjournment Beechey commenced batting against Clarke, and promptly scored a couple. Soon afterwards Marsh opened his score with a couple. Beechey, after putting up an excellent performance at the wicket; was bowled by Clarke. 57—3—30. Pratt replaced htai and scored a three with his flrst ball. In Clarke's next over Marsh was declared out, l.h.w. 74—4—7. Hughes filled the vacancy. Pratt had a close call at the wlekot, and was shortly afterward neatly caught by Bewley, ORborne bowling 83—5—18. Lynskey replaced him at the wicket. A. Hughes was caught by Egglestone after he bad scored six. 89—6—6. Fearon, who filled the vacancy had a very short life, being caught by Hughes before he had a chance of increasing the score. 89—7—0.. The game at this stage became very Interesting. Penfold, who had taken Fearon's place, was caught and bowled by Osborne. 89—8—0. Worrall filled the vacancy. Lynskey wsb the next to fall a victim, being caught by Stalnton, without any addition to the score. 89—9—0. The Innings finished in a sensational manner a few seconds later, when Whalen, the new man, was bowled by Clarke. 89—10—0. No runs were scorsd by the last four wickets. The innings closed for 89, having lasted slightly less than an hour and a half.

North Taranakl opened their second Innings with a I'iadi of 16 civer their opponents on the first Innings. Their second effort produced 120 As the time left was Insufficient, South Taranaki did not go In for their second Innings, and the match was declared a win for North Taranaki by 16 runs on their first Innings.
