MOTOR TRAFFIC.
TAXI PROPRIETORS WAIT ON COUNCIL. A deputation from the New Plymouth taxi Car Owners' Association, consisting of Messrs. Ross, Morey and Petiticost, waited on the Borough Council last night with a view to having the by-laws relating to taxi traffic and licenses more Btrictly enforced. It was pointed out that the Association existed for the protection of the public as well as for furthering the interests of the taxi owners. What they wanted was a stricter examination of the men applying for licenses, a. more frequent examination of cars to test brakes, etc., better provision as to character of applicants for licenses, in which the Association offered its assistance to the Council, and the issuing of special licenses for race days, or the barring of men coming in to ply for hire on race days, who were not bona fide taxi drivers, strong exception being taken to farmers from the country coming in on those days and reaping a harvest which rightly belonged to the. taxi owners. They stated that while many of these drivers were quite competent for ordinary purposes, they were not sufficiently expert in congested traffic. If cutting them out of the running would mean a loss of revenue, the Association members were prepared to pay an increased license for themselves. The matter was referred to a'special committee of the Council for a report. In the course of their remarks, the deputation made appreciative references j to the tactful way in which the borough [ inspectsri d»alt with the motor drivers.
