Mr. A. G. Bennett has offered to donate to Manaia. £2OO lor the building of a women's rest room in the township. The local Town Board has accepted the offer. The beautiful gardens of Mr. C. A. Wilkinson's residence at Eltham were thrown open to the public on Sunday afternoon, awl a large number of people took the opportunity of inspecting the gardens, which were looking at their best. The North Taranaki men who came by the Athenic were passengers on the mail train on Saturday. On reaching Hawera 'they were provided! with refreshments hy the Somen's National Reserve, while the Hawera band gave them a welcome with a programme of popular airs.—Star. The War Graves Commission approved of the application from New Zealand for memorials at four sites in Europe, viz.: The Somme (factory corner), Messines (the square), Gravenstafel Cross Roads, and Le Quesnoy. It is not known what transpired regarding the sites nominated at Anzac and in Palestine, A letter was received last night from Messrs Webster Eros., by the Borough Council, suggesting that as the Council was considering the changing of some street names, the name of "James Lane" should be changed to "James Street." The Council considered the thoroughfare concerned was scarcely worthy of having the dignity of . a. "street" thrust upon it, and decided for the present to leave it in the category of "lanes." In one line of merchandise the turn of the tide has come in favor of British industry. A cable from Sydney states that "the break in the Pacific cable lias been mended, and the normal service resumed. The Warigajiui Borough Council has decided to proceed with the erection of the museum and art gallery on the reserve at the back of Kis Majesty's Theatre. The estimated cost is £20,000. The bequest of the late Miss Alexander was £12,000, which, with interest, will swell to approximately ,£15 t OOO. The deficiency is to be made up out of borough funds. In the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning G. H Gardiner was brought up on remand in connection with charges of breaking and entering and theft, and also attempted arson. He was also further charged with theft from the warehouse of Messrs John Avery, Ltd. On the application of SubInspector Hutton a further remand to Thursday .-was granted. Frederick and Chiis.. Mn£o n , who were arrested in charges of theft from several ' wl district premises, also appeare, demand, and: some further charges were preferred against them. Tliey were also remanded to appear on Thursday. There are now nineteen charges against these two young men.
At the New Plymouth Borough Council last night a letter from the State AdvunciM Department revealed the tact that the recent legislation giving local bodies power to raise loans for housing their employees was not so beneficial as at first was supposed. Authority was given for loann for this purpose up to £ 14,000 per annum, but the decision affects all other loans from the Government, as it is held that £IO,OOO is the limit to which any local body can borrow from the tiovcrnnient in any one year, so' that any body that borrows £IO,OOO for housing (as New Plymouth has done) cannot get any further loan from the Government in 'the same year for any other purpose. Comment at last night's meeting suggested that local bodies would (unless the provision were altered) throw over their housing schemes in preference for other more important work.
The annual meeting of the New Plvmonth branch of the Protestant Political Association was held last night in the Baptist schoolroom. There was a good attendance. Mr. *R. C. Hughes (president) occupied the chair and gave an address on the work of the branch, in which he dealt with the need for increased activity in promoting its aims. were also given by Mr L A Taylor, LL.B. (Hawera),' and Mr' Israel. The following officers were elected:— President, Mr. B. C. Hughessecretary, Mr. F. Goodacre; treasurer, Mr. O. Peat; committee, Mrs Honnor Mis? B. Mace, Messrs Hoby, Richardson, McMulliu, Alecock, and Payne. The Melbourne, Ltd., still have a few natural undershirts at 3s Gd and underpants to match at 3s lid pair.
