STRATFORD RACING CLUB. IMPROVEMENTS TO COURSE DECIDED ON. (From Our Own Correspondent) The Stratford Racing Club, -at a largely attended meeting held on Wednesday evening, deoidod to adopt a. comprehensive scheme of improvements to the racecourse, which will involve a total expenditure of-about £2O 000 The scheme, as drawn up by' Mr. Hill, of Ellerslle, provides for an almost perfect course—the plan indicating one a long way ahead of the present course at Ellerslle It also provides for a 50ft training track, and gives two straight starts,, with four equal turns. Provision is made for drainage, stands, boxes, motor traffic and other course appurtances. In moving the adoption of tho plan, Mr ,1 Frederic contended that It had enormous advantages over the scheme submitted bv Messts. Sladden, Palmer and Horner, and estimated to cost altogether about £l3 000 He urged -that the Club should look ahead' keeping in view the fact that the town was llkoly to progress a great deal in coming years. He thought the members of the Club would more readily find tho money for an ideal, than for a second-rate course. Tho motion .was seconded by Mr. D. MaMr. Hill was practically Identical with the Awapunl track, which was nrobakly the most perfect in the North Island. Mr. p. Skoglund Supported Mr. Hill's scheme, and remarked that If the No 2 scheme was adopted. It would mean that alterations would have to be made In future years. Mr. M. McDonald supported the No 2 scheme, contending that it, could be Improved upon, os opportunity arose until Hie course was as good as set out in, No. i scheme. Ha was of the opinion that If the latter scheme was adopted the Club would net be able to bold races for twelve months. Mr. J W. McMillan supported No. 1 scheme, because he believed It wouia be a permanent improvement to the Club property and to the town, and would be suitable for racing for practically all time. Mr. F D Gaffaney and Mr. C. Jackson also supported No. 1 scheme. Mr. Frederic pointed out that although they could not race on the new course next meeting, the old track would not be Interfered with by the work and could be used. Air. F. J. Mackay suggested that the Club's representative at the next racing conference should move that the dubs whose racing days were rertuccd during the war should be allowed to denote part of their totallsator money towards course improvements. Mr. TA-edoric's resolution was then put to the meeting and carried oy 20 votes to 13. A number of members did not vote. It was also decided, on tho motion of Messrs. Frederic and Maione, that Mie committee should be asked to bring down a scheme of finance tc be presented at a future meeting. The president (Mr. A. Stewart), In answer to a question, said the expondlture of the total sum would be extended over a number of years.
