'■'■■■ TO BE ENFORCED, '< The vexed question of the wheel tax was- again before the Taranaki County Council at its last meeting, When the ; chairman stated that the Council hadrefrained from collecting the tax pending receipt of a communication from the Government, but as no communication had been received he would move that the Council instruct its inspector to collect the tax as proposed at a previous meeting. They would therefore be able to collect the tax for the present .half year. Cr. Wooldridgo considered that this would interfere greatly with the show. He thought they might drop the collection for this half year. People would sooner leave their cars in the shed for a month than pay.the tax. The chairman said that the collection xjould be withheld, until after the show. He pointed out that several people had already paid their tax and it was not possible to refund the amount. Councillors must either vote the tax in or out. Ho had carried the odium but it was immaterial to him whether they put on the tax or not. The resolution was carried, only Cr. Wooldridge voting against it. There seems to bo considerable misunderstanding regarding the imposition of the tax. It only applies at present j to cars owned in the Counties of Taranaki, Stratford and Clifton and to the boroughs within those counties. Cars | owned in the country of Egmont are ■ exemptI -
