DRIED MILK.

To the Editor* Sir—The timo appears opportune to again raise th'j ciuestlon for the benetlt of Taranakt in general and New Plymouth In particular. A forward movement is desirable, and we should endeavor to fall into line with enterprising people in other parts of the Dominion, the United States and Canada. It is estimated 1000. cows would run a dried milk factory, and I feel sure that in tire district from Oakura to Lepperton, including the land lying towards Inglewood and the mountain, this could be secured. More could be done, provided an enterprising firm of motor experts assumed the responsibility of handling the imilk, relieving the tiller of the soil and expert dairyman in this direction. As a result of all motor traffic improved roads would be the consequence. Dried milk and condensed milk factories pay considerably more than that paid by cheese or butter factories. In thp United States and Canada co-opera-tive societies are paying 4s and 4s Cd per lb. butter-fat, and even in New Zealand the proprietary concerns pay 2s 4d to 2s Cd, about to 2d more than the co-operative factories pay for butter and cheese. The cost of an up-to-date factors' upon the lines indicated would be about £25,000, and about half of this subscribed would make the success of a company possible The balance could doubtless be arranged. In the Increased value placed upon their land guarantors would be speedily repaid. In addition they would be doubly compensated by the Increased price assured them for their butter-fat. I commend, Mr. Editor, the above to the business people in town, as well as the producer in the country, and trust that, some practical result will ensue.—l am, ,etc, ARTHUR B. GIBSON. Pillis Street, New Plymouth, March 2.
