The forty-fifth annual Autumn Show ,of the Taranaki Metropolitan Agricul- . tural and Pastoral Society opened yester- ; dty, at the Waiwakaiho grounds, under ;• . -wry favorable and auspicious circum- * -tfhurces. : . ; Tie steady growth in this popular ex- . hlbition, which has been so apparent dur- ■ dug recent years, and which has resulted .in larger entries year by year, has been - maintained, and this year the number of • exhibits in the different classes has ex- ' eneded all previous records. What is an . 'even more satisfactory feature of the ' show than larger entries is the .fact that ' the standard of the stock has been stead- ' ily improved until now the quality ranks 'With the best that can be produced in any part of the Dominion. preparations for the show were mftde with a completeness and praise- _ worthy attention to details which re- . fleeted greatly to the credit of the committee of the" Society, who are happy in ftha possession of such thorough-going officials, in the persons of Mr. W. B. Grant (President), and Mr. W. P. Okey .'(secretary), both of whom did their best yesterday to ensure the smooth working tof the plans made. ■ UP-TO-DATE GROUNDS. The ground improvements and additions to buildings proved of great value, And the progressive policy pursued in this respect, by means of which year by yest the conveniences of the grounds arcadded to, must tend to popularise the fixture both with exhibitors and the pubtic. The judging rings were found to projtide ample room for working in, despite the large .classes in some sections, while tile tic tension of the dining room accommodation, and the provision of offices for •the secretary and press reporters, was highly appreciated. The catering was in the capable hands ' 0 a splendid committee of ladies, who for the third time now have taken the ■pie responsibility of this most important «w'ork. Their service yesterday was quite tip, to the standard they have created, dsd they have complete arrangements 2bade for dealing with a large crowd of jptrons to-day. The booth is under the dootrol of Mr. E. Whittle. The attendance of the public was very satisfactory for a first day, the gate takings being over £7 in advance of the first day takings last year. The judging began at an early hour, and the large number of entries, and the generally high standard of the stock, gave the judges no easy task in selecting (the winners in some of the classes. There were very few delays, yet notwithstanding this, it was approaching 5.30 p.m. before the, last class was finished. The judges carried' out their work with satisfaction, in the majority of cases the de- ■ fasioSs meeting with popular approval. ? SPJLENDID SHOW OF JERSEYS. f-. THE QPEHING DAY. A SPLENDID EXHIBITION.

tion of all who stood around the judging ring. Almost without exception the animals were shown in splendid condition. In the pedigree section, Mr. Frank Ranford's bull "Achievement of Willowbank," which has never been beaten iu its class yet, was awarded the championship, Mr. A. A. Ward, Tariki, getting reserve champion wi'iii "Miss Meadows' Maori Boy." In cows the championship, and also the Jersey Breeders Association's gold medal, were awarded to Messrs Wrenn Bros.' (Hawera) "Queen of Gipsies," and the reserve to Mr. Ward's "Miro Meadows Melba." The champion did not compete at the Hawera Show. An interesting section of the Jersey class was that for calves entered in the First Taranaki Jersey Oaks, in which there were I!)'entries, the first award going to F. W. Cornwall's (Bell Block) "Oaklaads Bell Mahone.". The class for semi-ofiicially tested cows was won by Mr. H. C. Sampson's (Hillsborough) "Frisky Rose." TKe judge, Mr. E. i). McLennan, of Papakura, Auckland, said that the Jerseys provided the largest display of Jersey classes that he had ever seen. The yearling classes were exceptionally strong, and augur well for the future of the Jersey in Taranaki. The winning animals were of special merit, and there were many among those who did not take prizes that would have got a place in almost any show ring, lie spoke in high terms of the champion and reserve champion in both male and female sections. Mr. McLennan also paid a tribute to the work of the stewards, who, he thought, did remarkably well, considering the large classes they had to handle. STRONG/CATTLE CLASSES. The Friesians were" also a strong class, and some excellent stock of this strain came into the ring. Mr. H. W. Hoskin (Mangatoki) with Nazle Foyne Sigis, defeated the Hawera champion cow Lady Bountiful Domino, owned by Mr. H. Johnston, of Stratford. Mr. R. Castle (Matapu) secured first and champion in the bulls in this section, his Holland Queen Son beating Mr. Hoskin's Mynheer Sigis Galatea 10th of Raeelands. j The Ayrshires were well represented, comparatively, and made a good show for I a class not in great favor in this district. I The championship in the bulls classes went to Mr. W. Hall's (Lepperton) Dominion Beauty's Bonus, anu reserve to | the same exhibitor's Truby. In the j cow:,, Mr. Hall was also awarded the championship with Dewdrop Ist of Brookside, which beat the Hawera owned cow Lotus of Waipapa. The Shorthorns and Herefords were also very creditable classes, some fine beasts in both being brought into the ring. In the fat cattle classes some splendid beasts are shown, the principal exhibitor being Mr. A. T. Willis (Hawera). There was not very keen competition, so far as numbers were concerned, in the sheep classes, though the quality of the exhibits made judging a close matter in some cases. Mr. A. H. Street (Bell Block) has strong entries in several sections, while in the he is the only exhibitor. Messrs. Hunter and Blair, of Hawera, and Mr. C. H. Weston (New Plymouth) are also among the prominent exhibitors in the breeds which they specialise in.

PIGS AND HORSEf\ In pigs, as usual, there was not very heavy competition, though showing an improvement on previous years. All through those exhibited were a very nice lot, some real good pigs being shown. In the any other variety section the Taranaki Hospital Board secured the championship with a fine specimen Tamworth boar. The horses shown yesterday were a good lot, the draughts being in fine condition. The leaping events which were decided attracted a good deal of attention, there being some good jumping. There were a few tradesmen's exhibits, and some stands have been pegged off far some side-shows which are to come on to the ground to-day. Altogether the exhibition is a most attractive one, and with fine weather to-day, the attendance should easily surpass all previous records. To-day's events are of a spectacular character, and include a grand parage of all prize stock at 2 p.m. sharp.
