SEA CAPTAIN DROWNED.
WELL-KNOWN COASTAL SKIPPER. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wangauui, March 2. Captain Charles Thompson, of the steamer Invereargill, was drowned early this morning. When returning to the ship at one o'clock he fell overboard as he was climbing the rail. The mate on deck witnessed the occurrence and roused the crew to assist the skipper, but the ell'orts proved unsuccessful Captain Thompson was a well-known coastal skipper. He was married and his wife resided at Newtown, Wellington. The body of Captain Thompson was recovered this morning'. There was mark on the forehead, evidently caused by a projection on a portion of the ship. The blow probably stunned him, thus accounting for his immediate disappearance. Deceased had been well known in the coastal trade for the last 30 yeare. lie was an aflicer on the *>ld Kiwi and Katu. master of the Ilimitangi for many years. He was in charge when the ship was lost oil the Chathams recently. For many years he was an officer for Richardson's East Coast service. Ho left about a year ago to join the Invereargill as master;
