LEATHER GOODS DEARER, The first sale of hides in New Plymouth since the removal of the embargo' and the abolition of fixed prices took place in Messrs, L, A, Nolan's store yesterday afternoon. There was a very representative attendance of buyers for both, local consumers and the export trade. The catalogue was a good one, the general quality of the goods offered being of an excellent character. There was keen competition for all tinea which were cleared under the hammer, buyers operating very freely up to Hg-. urea which exceeded £he best prices aeour* ed at recent sales in the large centres. Best ox hides reached 23 7-8 d per lb, which was Jd above the price made earlier in the day at Stratford. Cows touched 23d, and sound calves were sold at from 46 7-8 d .to 48 5-8 d per lb. The top price for horse hides was £2, and, goat skins reached 6s 3d. Tallow In casks reached 73s (kl per cwt, and buiw dries sold at full rates. The indications showed that the market was still rising, and the prospects point to increased prices for all leather goods.

STRATFORD PRICES. The first sale of hides, eking and tallow held in Stratford since (the embargo fcaa been removed, took place yesterday, and as the last sale was held in December of last year, there was a good over 7000 lots being submitted by th» three local firms—Messrs. Newton King, Farmers' Co-operative Organisation So* ciety, and N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. The tanners freely exercised their right under the new regulations to purchase for local use at market price the whole of the hides and calf skins produced in the Dominion, taking at the price of the last bid the best quality offered. Bidding was very spirited, and great prices were realised. Ox hides, for which the best schedule price under the com mandeer was 14d, realised as high at 2a 1 -Bd, whilst cow hides (12d) realised up to 23|<1, yearlings (15d) up to 31d, mid calf skins (2s) up to 49d.
