POTATO EXHIBITION.

A SPLENDID DISPLAY. The competitive display of potatoes arranged by Mr. L. B. Webster, and shown in Messrs Webster Bros.' mart, on Saturday, resulted in the bringing together of as line a display of tubers as could be made in any part of the Dominion. The idea grew out of a feeling on the part of many local growers that the date of the Horticultural Society's show was too early for a good exhibition of potatoes. The Society seemed undisposed to take any action and Mr. Webster, through his firm, offered to arrange a competition and provide the prize, money in order to ascertain if a satisfactory displav could be secured at a more suitable season. It was agreed that the competition should take place under the auspices of the Horticultural Society, but

all the responsibility was accepted by Mr. Webster himself, the idea being that if successful the Society should consider taking up tli9 matter next year, with possibly some extensions in the nature of competitions in other vegetables. No entry fee was charged exhibitors, and visitors to the display were admitted free of charge. The response was most gratifying, and is practically a challenge to the Society to take up the matter next season. There were about !)0 entries, displaying about "0 varieties of potatoes. Md the exhibits were a splendidly uniform set. In addition to the competi+ioi; Messrs L. B. Webster and G. V. Tate had specimens of potatoes and other vegetables for exhibition only and for a good rlisnlay of potatoes bv the Standard VI. boy's of the' Central School a certificate of merit was awarded.

Mr. Webster deserves to be heartily congratulated on the success of his enterprise, which should stimulate the Horticultural Society to a definite proposal on an extended scale for next season. The judges were Messrs. S. Longstaff and L. B. Webster, and their awards were as follows: Gamekeeper, or Northern Star.—CVV. Ruebe 1, W. Healy 2,. E. J. Smith 3,1 W. J. Arundle v.h.c, T. C. List h.c.
