Mr. Newton King, who went to Wellington on Harbor Board business' last week, returned to New Plymouth on Sat-* urduy night. The Argus learns that' the health of Mr. R. 11. Irwin (acting town clerk of Lltha.ro) shows little isign of improvement. • . It is understood that Mr. J. C, Yorke factory inspector at New Plymouth, is shortly retiring. A cable from Sydney says the Metho* dist Conference agreed to the Samoani Synod's request that the Rev. Slade, ofj New Zealand, should be transferred ta that district. A cable reports the death of Sin Thomas Anderson Stuart, Dean of the* Faculty of Medicine at the University, of London. Mr. Roy F. Baird. Assistant Land Registrar at New Plymouth, left on Friday morning for Blenheim, where he will relieve the District Land Registrar; for three weeks. Mr. 0. Cook left on Saturday morning to meet his mother, Mrs. Grayson, who is arriving by the Athenic, due in Wellington on March C. Mrs. Grayson has been residing in England for the past six l years. At the meeting of the Eltham Bom ough Council on Friday evening, the,' resignation of Cr. J. Ballantine wa* accepted, and a resolution of appreciation of his services was ordered to ha recorded in the minutes. The Rev. Gordon T. Beale, at present ennife of .St., Barnabas, Mt. Eden, Auckland, has been appointed vicar of Holy -1 rmity, Te Henui, in succession to the Kfiy. H. A. Favell, who has resigned, It is understood that Mr. and Mrs. Beats will arrive at the cud of the month. At the Eltham school, on Friday, Mr, H. W. Jackson, who has been appointed headmaster of the Tawhiti School, was fare-welled by the staff and pupils and presented with a barometer as a token of their esteem.
Mr. E, K. Long, the editor of the Amtralasian column in the London Timos, is visiting the chief centres in Australia, and in due season will come to New Zealand. His purpose is to arrange for better representation of Dominion news in the columns of the Times. Mr. and Mrs. George C. Sage, of Cameron street, Hawerafon Friday (reports the Star), celebrated their golden wedding, when there was a general fum, ily gathering. They have a family of 13, nearly all of whom were presentMr. and Airs. Sage were presented with ft suitable gift, while Mr. Sage also gave a valuable present to his wife. Mr. Kenneth Eraser, whose death at the ripe age of seventy years took place on J-riday last, was one of the original wttlcw on the Plains, a „d resided on the tarm he took up when the Plains were thrown open until his death. Mr. S. L. Mark, who has been inspector .for the Taranaki district for the standard Insurance Coy. for some time pest is severing his connection with the company in order to join the firm of Messrs. John Rigg and Co., general merchants, Wellington, who are extending their operations to the South Island, and At". Mark is taking charge of their business in Canterbury and the Went Coast. He leaves New Plymouth in the course of a few days.
Word was received in town on Saturday of the death of Mr. Walter Young. The deceased had been in ill-health for some time past, and his condition of late had been such as to cause his relatives and friends great anxietr, so that the end was not altogether unexpected. The Jate Mr. \onng had many friends in thi< dntrict. particularly in sporting circles, who will sincerely regret to learn of his death. For many years lie acted as judge at the meetings of the Opunake Racing Club and vsome years ago was a prominent local golfer. A well-known figure in the Taranakl district has been removed bv the death ot Mr. Andrew Kelly, n t the age of 67 years, which occurred nt the New Ply. mouth hospital on Thursday. The laV» Mr. Kelly was born in Ireland and settied in this province about 40 years ago. He became engaged in saw-milling up the Mokau River, and latterly occupied a dairy fnrm in the same neighborhood He also had farming interests in the lihama and Hawera districts. During his long residence in this district, Mr. Kelly established a reputation for honesty and upright dealing, and there are many fnends who will regret to hear of his death, which occurred at the close of a short illness. Among the visitors staving at tho Dawson's Falls Mountain 'llosterly »« present are Dr. Tillyard, the well-knowa Australian entymologist, who has been. appointed biologist to the Cawthorn Institute, Nelson, and Dr. Thomson, direc tor of the Dominion Museum, Wellington. They are making observations and collections from the geological, botanical and entomological points of view. Mr. W. W. Smith, curator at Pukeknra iark and meteorological observer, joined them yesterday.
