UNION OF THE CHURCHES.
SYMPATHY OP MKTPIOIUSTS. THE DAXGKRS OF DELAY. The matter of church union was referred to bj the president of the Methodist Conference, the Kev. K. Drake, in the course of his inaugural address. He said the hopes raised liy the visit of a deputation from the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church at the last Methodist Conference had not reached fruition. Because of the activities of a vigorous minority, the last Presbyterian Assembly decided to reappoint the committee dealing with the matter, and to continue to seek to foster the spirit of union. Mr. Drake said ho was assured by leading Presbyterians that such n decision was .1 hopeful sign, and that possibly in two years' time union will be consummated. Prolonged negotiations find discussions had a tendency to become embittered and; to put oil' the desired end. It was possible to stumble over matters of property, over non-essentials in doctrine, and even over historical 1 radit ions, and to miss the prize. Whatever proposals in the direction of evangelical church union were made in the friture, they wouk'. receive the i.trefnl and >ympathetic consideration of the MethoUist Church of New Zealand.
