FARMERS' UNION.
TARANAKI EXECUTIVE. A meeting of the Tsranaki Executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union was held on Thursday. Present: Messrs. R. Dunn (president), R. Lambie, T. Julian, D. L. A. Astbury.'.B. Orr, J. Swindlehurst, T. W. Owen, K. Betts, S. Vickers, and G. H. Buckeridge (secretary). A letter was received from the Prime Minister in regard to the executive's application for an extension of the concession under which lime for agricultural purposes'is carried free on the railways, am? saying that he would be glad to look into the matter to see whether anything could be done in the direction desired.
The Taranaki County Council forwarded a copy of a memo sent to the Minister for Agriculture protesting against the introduction of Somme poppies into the Dominion, and asking for the support of the executive. The president said that they had poppies in the Dominion before this, and so far, no harm had resulted. There was a good deal of sentiment connected -with the introduction of seed from the Somme. If this particular seed was going to become a noxious weed, then hf>>ust oppose it coining into the Dominion. Mr. Owen said he knew for a fact that in England poppies had become a nuisance to land used for cropping. Mr.. Julian remarked that there were several returned soldiers in his branch who were of opinion that it would be a, great mistake to allow the insroduciion of the Somme poppvOn the motion of- Mr.'Dunn, seconded by Mr. Betts, it was resolved that the executive is strongly opposed to :ho movement to introduce the Nomine poppy seeds to this Dominion, a.; from information received from returnel soldiers there would be a danger of it becoming a noxious weed.
After the luncheon adjournment Mr K. A. Sutherland attended the meeting The question of the hide embargo was difcussed, and Mr. Owen moved: "That this executive desires to place on r vil its thanks to the Hon. Mr. Mas?ay for rfcs valuable work lie has done iii repord to the removal of. the emhart'o on hides, at the same time they ai'o desire to draw the attention of the Prime Minister to the statements that have been made that there are large stocks of bides which have been held in Xew Zealand awaiting the removal of Ihe restrictions, arid requests him to use his endeavors to see that the same restrictions as; apply to wool that was held back to evade the operations of the commandeer should apply in the case of bides that have been stored for a similar purpose. Afr. Julian seconded the motion, and it was carried. The Peilding branch of the Farmers' Union forwarded the following resolutions:—' "That this meeting request the New Zealand Government to impress on the Government the seriousness of th* position that will arise in the Dominion with the lifting of the requisitioning 6i meat, and to urge, upon Me Imperial (Wernment the necessity of clearing the meat from the Js T ew Zealand stores at the end of their contract, or to continue the purchase until such times as they are able to do so, and to announce at the earliest possible moment its policy and intention, and bow they will meet the position which will j arise in June next" "This meeting urges upon the Government the advisability of sondin» to! England at the earliest possible date the commission as at present constituted, viz., Dr. Beakes, Messrs Poison, Burrell, and Jones, M.P., for the purpose of assisting the- Government to solve the question of the disposal, of our meat." On. the. motion of Messrs. Dunn and I Owen the resolutions were endorsed. Copies of the resolution arc to be forwarded to the Feilding branch and to the Prime Minister. The provincial secretary referred to th? advisablencss of the executive securing a report upon the limestone outcrop near Huiroa. After rather a lengthy discussion it was decided to I : write to the Geological Department | asking if it had an officer available to make a detailed report upon the out--1 crop. In the course of the discussion it was stated that it was not the first [cost of the lime which was the hurdle, but the cost of transit.—Star.
