MISHAP TO BADEN-POWELL.

AN INQUIRY OPENED. Captain S. .Stringer, Superintendent of Mercantile Marine, commenced a preliminary inquiry at Wellington on Thursday concerning the mishap to the steamer Baden Powell, which struck an obstacle wliile en route from Wellington to New 'Plymouth last week. Captain Stringer commenced taking the evidence of Captain H. P. Olson, his mate, and engineer, and resumed the examination of each of the three yesterday. The evidence of the helmsman will also be taken. The evidence will be forwarded to the Marine Department for consideration.
