RED CROSS SOCIETY.

SPEECH BY GOVERNOR-GENERAL- ! Chriatchurch, Feb- 2<S. Speaking at the annual meeting of the British Red Cross Society and Order of St. John to-day the GovernorGeneral said he thought it a matter of extreme gratification that the parent bodies of the organisation had come to an arrangement to continue their activities' during peace time not as separate units, but ns a combined undertaking. Although he was leaving New Zealand, he did not propose to dissociate himself from Red Cros9 matters. He alluded to the very generous offer which had been made to tho society from Home through Mr. Robert Hudson of £30.000. As to the object to which this money should be devoted. Lord Liverpool said it struck him that it might bo possible to place the* ambulance section of the association on a \ sounder basis by the capitalisation of all the surplus moneys, together with i this £30,000, and so" institute a fun<! for providing trained nurses who could educate the population regarding ambulance requirements. - Another question was that this sum of £30,000 wns really required in New Zealand. The moneys which New Zealand sent to the parent organisation were sent as free gifts, and it was never contemplated that any of these sums would be returned. Would not the host course to pursue he to accept the money and request the parent organisation to utilise it for the starving population in Europe, preferably the children? Should the Dominion adopt this course, he suggested she would take a lead, and would probably induce others to follow and to assist "indireet•ly in dealing with the problem which will call for all the best brains to solve. In conclusion, Lord Liverpool said he would look back with pride on all New Zealand had accomplished for the benefit of sailors and soldiers: who had been incapacitated in the service of the Empire.
