ILL-TREATING CHILDREN.
PINE INFLICTED ON A FATHER By Telegraph.—Press Association: Wellington, Feb. Vl'. Mr. Page, S.M., delivered judgment to-day on charges against Charles Grayndler, secretary of the N«w Zealand Shearers' Union, for iH-treajHng three of his children, two boy» aged 11 and 13, and one girl aged 8. Evidence was given during the hearing that the children had been cruelly, thrashed and kicked. The magistrate said that he must enter a conviction. The defence raised was that Grajmdler at the time was not responsible for his acts, being a lunatic within the meaning of the Act. Iffo doubt tba man was sick, but the defence was not sufficient to exempt hint from criminal responsibility, A fine of £lO was' inflicted, or in default 21 days' imprisonment on the first charge of ill-treating the boy of 11 years. He was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence in 12 months on the other charges. ■ JU-.
