A RECORD FOR WELLINGTON. AUCKLAND PRICES EXCEEDED. • By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. After the Auckland sales of this week, it was anticipated hides would realise firm prices at'the first sale held in Wellington since the lifting of the embargo on export. t * When. the sale was held the prices made a record for Wellington, and showed an appreciable advance on those realised at Auckland. Approximately 13,000 hides and calfskins were offered, and prices generally were from eighty to a hundred per cent, higher than the Government schedule prices. Buyers operate 1 on behalf of English, Canadian, United States and Australian firms. It will he remembered the fixed price for ox hides of best quality was 13d a pound. The first firm to sell to-day obtained 22 1 /»d a pound for first quality ox hides, 22d for cow hides, 26% d for rips, 2SV 3 d for yearlings, 44d for calfskins. The latter price was paid for a shipping line. Beef tallow brought £Bl a ton, | mixed tallow £7B, tinned tallow £OS. [ • BOOTS ,TO BE DEARER. ! Big prices for hides were expected at the sales to-day, in view of the lifting of the control prices, but the advance exceeded expectations in many cases. '. The tanners were represented at the sale. They showed unwillingness at first to taice advantage of the preference given them by the new Order-in-Couneil, the prices being ahead of their ideas of values, but if appears that they are now covering their requirements. A local boot manufacturer stated this evening that the advance in the price of hides recorded at to-day's sales, if confirmed by other sales, would mean an advance of 7s Od a pair in the price of the standardised boots, and of 12s fid a pair in other boots.
