MOTES ON THE RACING. WINNERS WELL CONCEALED. ..,.. SAIN SPOILS THE SPORT. • ' ; (By "Me-tnroa.") Wanganui, Last Night Heavy rain was experienced for the opening day of the Wanganui Jockey Club's autumn meeting, which took place this afternoon, several heavy showers helping to imake matters very uncomfonabte, Tha weather cleared later on and the last few races were run under perfect climatic conditions. The attendance was very satisfactory, visitors being present, from nil parts of the country. The racing wan thoroughly interesting and some exciting .contests were fought out The handlcapper, Mr. H. Coyle, set backers a stiff conundrum,, for only ono first favorite won during the day, the dividends all being Very substantial. Those on Haversack and P.leuse ran into doublo, figures. Mr ,T. McMahon, chief stipendiary steward was in attendance and ho found 't necessary to call the judicial committee together to hear a complaint against M. McDonald, rider of Fitllca for disobeying the starter's lnslrac■ras in the Welter Handicap. After hear- >", e ]v lie , ,lc ? fro '" ,IIOSB immediately concerned both jockeys were fined £5 each. Originally the Cup w:is rui over two and a quarter miles, and such T.-it stayers as True Blue. Opawa, Reso.jiij. pi-i----fire Betrayer, Hailstorm, King Quail and The Poet won over that dlstnnee. In ISBG and 1887 the race was run over two mi.es. and the following year the distance was '.irther reduced, to a mile and which (happily) has since been maintained, and. judging, by to-day's field, we s'ill have a considerable number of horses capable of getting to the end of that distance. During the past thirty years the lending stayers of the Dominion have figured In the race, and flic winners include Diirtn, Liberator. Ladv Zetland, Blarney, Swordflsh, Douglas. Advance, Nonette Merrlvonia, Sinapls. Colonel Soult, Client and Dusky Eve—all horses that have attained high lienors on the Turf In New Zealand. Resolution won the race twice, Dudu thrice, and Client twice. In to-day's field were two previous winners. Client and Duskv Pre again on hand to battle for the coveted prize. (llent won in 1917 with 7.9, in 191S with 85, and last year ran unplaced with 90. He carried 5.7 tn-riay. Dusky 2ve won with 7 3 last year, and hail ribs more In the saddle this time.
Imprnrart ranhu; conditions, anil possibly different, style of radtiß, that. in. with the pare, clapped mi all the way. have paused a steady improvement in the times recorded in tho Wannanul Cup. In ISS.S Dudu took 3.8'/- to cover Iho distance, and lust vear Dusky Eve registered 2.59, which will take a lot of nr-allinc. In recent, years, as in the New Zealand Cup. the h.davy-weißht division havo not heen able to foot it with their lifthterweifflited rivals, and only once in the records of Iha race has a. horse won with list or more. Dudu holds tlio record. 92, and won asain Iho next year with 8.12. Pinflre was successful with S 12, Noncttc with 8.11, and resolution with S.lO. In recent years Slnapls 8 1(1, and riient ST. stand out, Init the records do not favor anything over Sat. The hrnokelod pair. Demand and Isabel, w.-iro backed, for the .luvenlle Handicap as if the event was a foregone conclusion, but a surprise was in store for backers, for the winner turned up in tho Mastertnn owned Itleusc, a full sister to Chimera. She won nicely by half ,1 lensrth from Canyon, with Insurrection close up third. The New Plymouth owned I'u.t Laziness was fairly well fancied, but finished in tho rue!;. Backers marto Amher'ne a hot favorl'e for tho Wlrltoa. Hack Handiean and once again devotees of the tote were wide off the mark, for tho ba.v man failed to K ei a place. HalloKvonta was always well placed, and stellint: off a strong viial'diita by Farce, won nieeIv by throe, parts of a iencth. with S'lnorallti * *•*» third and Admvra fnurti*.
The curtain was rune down on the day's racing by the decision of tho Flying Handicap, which attracted a capital field of twelve aprlnto™. Astlnome, who ran n couple of excellent races at Woodvllle tho previous week, carried slightly more money on the machine than Sllvar Link, who looked in rare fettle, while Spanner, with H. Uray In the saddle, was third choice with backers. At the start the colors of Swanee Rlvot and Bon Spec became prominent and the pair led to the turn, where Acre took charge and led Into ilia straight from a bunched field. Half-way up the straight 80-Peep put In her claim, and galloping very kindly, ran home an easy winner by a. length and a half from Swanee River, who heat Astlncme by a narrow margin, with Acre fourth and Lord Kenilworth fifth.
