An inquest was opened at the Courthouse this morning, before Mr. C. D. Sole, J.P., acting-Coroner, and a jury consisting of Messrs G. T. Walters (foreman), J. Petrie, H. Good and L\ Butchart, touching the death of Neil Peter Hansen, an elderly man, who died at the Stratford Hospital on Monday morning, as the result of injuries received through being knocked down by ft motor cyclist near the Midhirst Hotel, on Saturday, February 7. Mrs. Dorothy iM. Matson, daughter of deceased, and residing at New Plymouth, who identified the body, said her father Was of Danish nationality, 72 years of age, and a widower, lately residing at Christchtirch. His hearing was bad, but his eyesight, was good. She saw her father the accident, and he told her ■ ho had been walking along the roau, an d before he knew where he was, a motor cyclist came along and 'knocked him down so suddenly that he thought the motor cyclist must have been travelling fast. He got up and tried to walk, but 4us leg gave way under him. She did not know anything about it except what she had been told. On the application of Sergeant Dale, the inquest was then adjourned until 10 am, on Thursday. GENERAL. The Stratford Hospital Board held a special meeting this morning for the purpose of considering the accounts and '■■■ attending to a number of matters of a routine nature. Mr. R. Dingle, president of the Stratford A. and P. Association, has returned from a fortnight's motor tour, on which he was accompanied hv Mrs. Dingle. The Rev. A. Reader, of Thorndon, Wellington, who was formerly Methodist minister at Stratford, is spending n brief holiday in the town prior to' leaving >■■ i, xm i to attend the Methodist Conference The trains-for the Stratford School excursion on Thursday will leave Stratford for Moturoa Breakwater at 820 a.m. and 9.90 a.m.. returning at 5.5 p.m. and 5.35 p.m The 930 train will stop at Midhirst, Tariki. and Inglewood. Hot water and mills will be supplied free at thi! bench t A drizzling rain, which came on early this afternoon slightly marred the success'of the annual garden fete of St Andrew's Presbyterian Church, which was hold at the residence of Mr. H. E Lawrence, Miranda Street. The function was, however, continued in spite of the ram. and a fairly successful result was obtained.
