SERIOUS FRUIT DISEASE.
APPEARANCE IN DOMINION. The appearance in New Zealand of the fruit disease known as "fire blight," was referred to by the assistant director of horticulture, Mr. J. A. Campbell, in a speech at the luncheon given by the Huapai Fruitgrowers' Association on Saturday. "I regret to say that the great American 'fire blight' has at last found its way into New Zealand," Mr. Campbell said. "It is a serious disease, which has caused a lot of damage in the LTnited States and Japan. At present it is possibly not widespread in New Zealand, but in a very short time, if not checked, it will be, and much destruction caused. The disease can be checked if taken in time. My Department is arranging a plan of campaign, and will use its limited staff to the best of its ability. The disease can be detected on the young leaves and blossom buds, and if not checked will pass on to the main leaders and limbs, and form cankerous areas. The fruitgrower is called upon to cut away infected or suspicious wood and burn it, and also to notify the Department."
