HECHABITE CONFERENCE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Palmerston N., Feb. 24. A conference of delegates of the district council meeting of the Independent Order of Rechabites is sitting at Palmerston North, A public reception was accorded the delegates this morning. Replying, Sister Kennedy said that of 2500 male member* of the Order in the Dominion 700 answered the country's call and 101 made the supreme sacrifice. . ESCAPE FROM GAOL. # , Wanganui, Feb. 24. Oscar Strangebye escaped from gaol by sealing the wall this morning. A vigorous search -was prosecuted, but was unsuccessful. Strangebye was under remand on a charge of-breaking, enter-' ing and theft at AVanganui and was to appear before the Magistrate to-mor-row. He was arrested in Auckland, where he was recently sentenced to two years' imprisonment, and declared a habitual criminal for similar offences. TRAMWAYMEN'S WAGES. Christchurch, Feb. 24. TMa Tramway Union was cited beforethe Conciliation Council by the Tramway Board to-day and application made by the board for an, adjournment, pending the receipt of the result of the ballot. The application was not opposed by the union, and an adjournment was granted to March 6. Mr. Armstrong, union secretary, said the ballot would be unfavorable to the acceptance* f the employers' offer at the recent conference, and the Christchurch Union would demand an increase on that offer. The board's offer ranges from Is 6y 2 d to Is 9y 2 d per hour. The union, asks from la lOd to 2s. BURGLARIES IN "WELLINGTON. Wellington, Feb. 24. Several burglaries and attempted burglaries have been reported during the last few days. These have been thefts, including goods to the value of £IOO from a tailor's shop, goods to the value of £2OO from a millinery establishment, and in another case an unsuccessful attempt to dynamite a safe in a butcher's shop. The following message, dated February 21, from the Governor of Fiji, has been received by the Governor-General of New Zealand:—"The Indian strikers in Fiji have all returned to work at Suva and Rewa, and complete order prevails. There is no development as regards the northern and .western districts." 1 MAILS BY AIR. Wellington, Feb. 24. The Postal Department have made arrangements with the New Zealand flying school at Auckland to perform experimental aerial mail services over a limited' period between Auckland and Thames, Auckland and Dargaville, and Auckland and Whangarei. There will be* probably two or three trips weekly over each of the routes mentioned. An aerial mail is being dispatched from Auckland to Thames to-day, the plane returning in the afternoon. It is- proposed to make a second trip to and from Thames on Thursday.
