MUNICIPAL MATTERS.

NEW PLYMOUTH BOROUGH COUNCIL. GENERAL PURPOSES COMMITTEE. The General Purposes Committee of the New Plymouth .Borough Council met last flight, there being present the Mayor (Mr. James Clarke), Crs. F. J. HUI, W. F. Short, W. A. Collis, R. i, Parkin, A. E. Sykes, and A. S. Brooker. STREETS SUB-COMMITTEE. The Streets Sub-Committee made the following recommendations:—That the footpath on the north side of Devon Street, from the right-of-way above the site of the old Theatre Royal to the White Hart Hotel, be reconstucted in asphalt; that the footpath in front of Mr. J. Avery's warehouse in Currie Street be laid down in asphalt; that upon the necessary legal option being signed, granting the Council the right to purchase five acres on the south east corner of the Standish Estate, the Borough Engineer be authorised to prospect for a stone quarry thereon; that provisions of section 117 of the "Public Works Act, 1908," shall not apply to that part of the western side of*Cutfield Road, to which subdivisions 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 of Pt. section 25 Town Belt A New Plymouth have frontages, provided the owners of the land referred to sign an undertaking to the approval of the Borough solicitors that such owners will batter the bank sufficient to prevent the sfipping of portions of the bank on to the footpath, or that each, will erect a'stone wall along such frontage as intimated by them to the committee. Tl;e matter of the footpath on the north side of Devon Street, between the old Theatre site and the White Hart Hotel, was deferred until the engineer had gone into the question. The remainder of the report was adopted. ORDER OF TARRING WORK. The engineer stated that he had proposed to do the following tar-sealing works in the order given:—Carrington Road, complete first coat tarring in "two to two and a half days; Liardet Street, hrst coat; Park to Devon Street and Devon .Street to Molesworth Stre/Powderham Street, *rom Currie to Dawson Streets; Dawson Street, from P,.v,-. derham to Fulford Streets. By tho tune they were completed the Soiu.. Road and Cirrington Road should bo ready for their second coats. GENERAL. The trustees of the Workers' Social Hall (lute Good Templars) wrote drawing attention to the state of the street lit the end of the hall. The trustees intend to renovate the building and improve its appearance, and thev suggested tile Council might lay a few lengths of pipe and fill in the large open drain as it at present existed. The engineer reported that he had proposed to pipe the drain as far a<= Leach Street and raise the side kerb and channel, and he understood the Beautifying Society would plant it The work was defercrtl on account of more important works, and was later deleted from the list by resolution. Ho could not promise when the work could he done.

It was decided the matter should be held over in the meantime. The Society for the Prevention of Cnicjtv - l0 Animals wrote asking the Council to erect a drinking trou-h at Pioneer Road, near the Freezing Works and, if possible, to make it accessible to sheep dogi.

The engineer (stated the cost would be about £9 10s.

It was decided to inform the Society that as there was alreadv a troiHi at the junction of the South and Breakwater Roads the Council was of opinion that another one in the vicinity was not necessary

A notification was received to the effect that the price of shingle obtained from Waitara would bo increased bv is per cubic yard*
