Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt attention,) February 23Two instances of shop-lifting occurred at Hannah's boot shop, Broadway, on Saturday afternoon, resulting in the loss of one pair of shoe.; and two odd shoes. It is stated that both of the offenders were women, who came to Stratford from the country. In one instance a woman came into the shop with a perambulator, during the tea hour, and while the assistant was busy, slipped a pair of shoes into the perambulator. In the other case the offender was not so lucky, as she got away with two odd shoes, both for the one foot. Further enquiries are being made with ft view to tracing the offenders. The house shortage is very acute in Stratford, but it is not only dwellings which are short. Every day business people are heard complaining they cannot find accommodation. "If ' there were another twenty shops available in Stratford, I reckon they would be let without difficulty," said a business miln to-day. Premiums are still being offered by people who want to rent houses, but the result in most cases is ml. The position in regard tp influenza in the Stratford district is improving, very few fresh cases having been notified recently. DEATH FROM INJURIES. An elderly man named Noil Hansen, who was admitted to the Stratford Hospital on February 7, as a result of injuries received through being knocked down by a motor-cyclist, near the Midhirst Hotel, died at the hospital yesterday morning. Deceased was 70 years of ago anil was a widower living at New Plymouth. At the time of meeting with the accident he was on a visit to Midhirst, arid was walking along the road in company with several others when a motor-cyclist came up behind. The cyclist, it is stated, sounded his horn, and also had a bright light on his machine, but the deceased got in the way and was knocked down.
