ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY.

At a meeting of the Executive Council of the above Society, held on FriAxy evening, the secretary, Rev. 0. Blundell, reported that, Mr. W. F. Gale, F.E.A.S., of Sydney, had offered, at a very reasonable iigure, a six-inch refracting telescope, mounted as an equatorial and clock driven; also ?, twelveinch mirror and flat for a reflecting telescope. Dr. Farr, of Cliristchurcli, wrote stating that he had tested both these instruments and proved them to bo of excellent quality. After a full discussion, it was unanimously decided to close with Mr. Gale's offer. The refracting telescope is the work of Messrs. Alvan Clarke and Sons, the renowned makers of the areat Lick, Yeriies and Washington telescopes. The twelveinch minor will be mounted after it is received by the Society, and for ecrtain classes of astronomical work will be second to no other telescope in use in the Dominion. Further funds will be required in order to properly house this fine instrument, which can be placed close to the dome now in course of construction, and in which the six-inch equatorial will be duly .nstalled. These two powerful telescopes will enable our local observers to perform much useful work, and will provide magnificent views of the heavenly bodies for those- who visit the Marsland Hill observatory.
