TARANAKI'S BISLEY.

WITH THE RIFLE AT WAIWAKAIHO. OPENING DAY'S RESULTS. The thirteenth'annual meeting of the Taranaki Rifle Association was opened at the Rewa Rewa rifle range, Waiwakaiho, yesterday, under pleasant weather conditions, though a breeze that blew across the range made matters somewhat difficult for the competitors. This fixture, was formerly a very popular one among riflemen, and each year up to the last meeting, which was held in 1910, saw an increasing number of competitors. There is every indication that now shooting has been resumed the fixture will become as popular as before, for though the number of competitors (68) is not up to the pre-war standard, yet practically every club in Taranaki is represented, viz., Insfewood, Kaponga, Rahotu, Hawera, New Plymouth, Tahora. Patea, Whangamomona, whilst outside clubs include: Opaki, Petone, Ohura, Lenton, Kimbolton, Dunedin, VVaverley, Wanganui, Avondale, rana, ChrStehurch, and Mas'teoton. * Included among the competitors are: Rifleman Roots, a New Zealand champion. A. and E. Ballinger, S. J. Mayher, the latter being runner-up in l&lfi. The Suburbs Club, Wellington, which won the teams' match in 191 (i, when one of its members, Rifleman Hunt, also annexed the.aggregate, is nit represented this year; while the whole coastal district between New Plymouth and Opunake, which produced soaia fine shots in bvgone years, has but one representative.

The. shooting yesterday was not up to the standard of 'the last nieetiif. partly owing to the tricky wind, alfd also to the fact that the majority cf the harrels in use were old. Throughout the day only one possible was scored. Rifleman E. Guinney, of Pa tone, put tin » on 35 at 500 yards. Prior to the commencement of the shooting, Captain Hartnell, a life member of the Association, welcomed the visitors, and also made feelincr reference to the loss *he club had sustained bytho death of its president, Lieut-Col. Okey, who had occupied that position sine's t!ie formation of the Association, The arrangements for the meeting were very complete. Praise is due to the secretary and president. Mr. V. ,1 Hill, of the New Plymouth Rifle Club, {or the Rplendid arrangements made. Lieut Andrew, ViC. Captain F. L. Hartnell, and Messrs C T. Mills and Messenger were the range officers, Mr. E. Armitage was in charge of the trench. The catering was of a hisli standard and was managed by Mesdames F. J. Hill, W. Oliver, L. Tlonoyfield. Miss Sole and Mr. Fisher on behalf of the Association.
