OPUNAKE.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)' A motor launch from Patea put into the Opunake Bay on Monday afternoon and, after giving the juveniles an enjoyable trip round the'bay, took aboard some victuals and put out to sea, but meeting with heavy seas, the launch returned to the jetty and made fast. During the night it "broke away and drifted on the rocks. The party will return to Patea overland, with the engines of the launch packed in a box. The Seaside Society has decided to invite the New Plymouth band to visit Opunake at an early date and provide an afternoon's musical treat at the seaside. It is reported that the" Opunake band will decline to play for the Seaside Society in consequence of the invitation. A meeting of the Harbor Board was held lust Saturday afternoon, the chairman (Mr. T. P. Hughson) presided. All the members were present. The business was mostly formal, no developments regarding harbor construction works. Mr. A. O'Brien, secretary to the Board, resigned the position, but agreed to continue in office until his successor is appointed. The Education Board lias notified the local school committeo that the High School will be opened in a few days In the Anglican Sunday School, and that Miss Sage has been appointed teacher. The ladies' committee of St. Barnado's Church had charge of the mart sale last Monday, and had an excellent variety of goods. The takings are to be devoted to the church funds. The Farmers' Co-operative stock sale last Monday had the largest entry list this year. Some choice lines of 18months to 2-year-old steers wore yarded. Prices were good, .but not as high as vendors expect. If the County Council chairman's proposal to take a poll to'rate on the unimproved values is agreed on, a petition will be forwarded to the Town Board to take a sitaiiar poll in the town area. It is the intention of a number of ratepayers in the town area to make a test question at the next local poll on rating oil the unimproved valuesCorse crops in the town area are looking well at present. It i 3 proposed by the Seaside Society to hold a supplementary fete about Easter time. The Convent School candidate (Miss Freda Jarrett) is leading by 800 votes in the local Queen Carnival.' The Opunake Federal Band journeyed to Oaonui last Sunday afternoon and played a musical programme. There was a good attendance, and the programme was enjoyed by everyone present. The band is to be complimentad on giving these afternoon treats, which have a beneficial effect on the social life of the community. An Oaonui resident blew into a Chinese store the other day and. in •seeking various prices of stores, remarked that ho would have to knock off beins: a Scotchman, as the price of oatmeal («d per lb.) was too much. The Oriental quickly retorted that it was rio use being a Chinaman as rice was lOd per lb.!
