HAWERA SHOW.

t, & •«.. PEOPLE'S DAY. ' . FURTHER AWARDS. The Egiaont A. and P. Association was particularly unfortunate in regard to weather conditions for tlie 36tli annual show, which was concluded at Hawera yesterday. Rain fell throughout the first day, and yesterday's prospects looked anything but bright. However, early in the afternoon the sun shone out brightly, and by two o'clock there was a remarkably good attendance. Despite adverse conditions the show proved an outstanding success from every point of view but a financial one, and it cannot fail to result in a heavy financial loss. Already a number of members have offered to assist the Association by doubling their subscriptions, while others have offered to re-donate their pri,ze money and also to give special prizes. Judging was proceeded with expeditiously, and early in , the day all the awards in the cattle and horse sections were completed. The ring was fully occupied during the day, there being no less than nine jumping competitions to decide, some of which had as many as 28 entities. The events were got off without any delay, the programme finishing early. The jumping throughout was of a very interesting character, holding the attention of the crowd till the last event wai; concluded. Throughout, the jumping was of a high class, and it speaks well for the abilities of the competitors that such a large number of horses could compete on a ground, which, early in the day, was slightly holding, without there being a fall or any mishap. The Egmont Championship, for which fifty guineas were given in prize money, attracted 26 competitors The conditions were one round at hunting pace and once round at steeplechase pace. The winner proved to be J: .J. Bryce's Twilight, from Feilding. Mrs, Brewer's iocal horse, utility, wiiich hail only returned from Dunedin on Tuesday, after winning ithe £l2O eveht there, was second.

The pony jumping produced great fields. The judge said it was the best class he had ever seen, and it reflected great credit on Taranaki. The riding of the boys was really excellent, while he considered the only girl rider was a champion. The, high jump produced keen competition between E. Mason's Echo and F. Vincent's Whirlwind, the former winning. Both essayed to bj.it the show record of oft. S'/oin., and failed, the latter very narrowly. Mr. C. R. Star.nard, the new secretary, must be congratulated on tlie success that he achieved in hi:, department. The president, Mr. E. A- Washer, had a particularly trying time owing ;o the weather conditions, and with his fellowofficials, is to be congratulated on the way tliev worked.

Owing to the wet morning and to the large programme of competitions,' both days' events having to be decided, the committee decided to delete the Grand Parade from the programme, and though there was naturally considerable disappointment at the omission of this spectacular event, it is hard to see that the committee could have done otherwise. The pens were visited by large numbers of interested spectators. There were some fine displays of motor cars, agricultural implements, etc., ajid these also were tlie subject of favorable comment.

The Hawera Citizens' Band was present during the afternoon, and played an inspiring programme ,of music.
