Dew (Pahiatua), and Gibson (Xow Plymouth). Mr. William .Spencer Hampson, a wellknown resident of Nelson, was found dead in his office on Monday. Recently. i deceased had been under the cure of Dr. Rett, who was able tp give a certilieate as to the cause of death. The late Mr. Hampson had been a resident of Kelson for many year--. He was, at iha time of his death, the senior member of the City Council, on which body hj« had sat continuously for many years, and had never been beaten at the' eleelions. For many years he wan secretary of the Nelson Freezing Works, and at the {in- of his death was secretary to the Nelson Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Hampson leaves a widow and ft "vov.n-ii,. family of four sons and two daughters. 'Mr. Robert Mair, whose death took place in Whangarei last week at the ripe of Si) years, was one of the earliest pioneer settlers of the Whancarei district and was probably the oldest -New Zealand born European in New Zealand at the time of his death. His father, Gilbert Mair, was born at PeterI head Scotland, in 17!)!), eame first to New Zealand in .1820 aboard the Whaler New Zeahnder," and finally settled at Paihia, Bay of Islands, in* 1824, and later established a trading station at V\ ahapr i„ the year 1527 he married Elizabeth Gilbert Puckey, nt Sydney, • and brought her to the Bay of Islands. thus was the Mair family first established in New Zealand. ' Their eldest son, Robert Mair, was born at. Paihia, Bay of Tslands, in June 1830. The family migrated to Whangarei in 1848. In the year 1857 Gilbert Mair died at Whangarei. Upon Robert, at the early age of 27, devolved the responsibilities of providing for the maintenance of ft fam-Wi ily of 12 brothers and sisters, jnostly his juniors, in n country, at that time, " sparsely populated by a handful of Europeans amidst the turmoil of native tribes whose chief occupation Was war. After the vicissitudes which .usually fall to tho lot of pioneer settlors under' such conditions Robert Mair finally established tho home firmly and cnduringlV m Whangarei.
