STRATFORD.

Arrangements are well in hand for the street ejection and sale of goods, which are to be held on Saturday, in aid of the funds for providing an X-ray plant at the Stratford Hospital. . The sum of £SOO is required, and further donations are needed in order that this amount may be obtained. Donations of goods will also be appreciated by the Ladies' Red Cross Committee. At the Town Hall on Monday evening, a public meeting will be held for the purpose of explaining to the public the position in regard to the removal of the railway station. The Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan) will preside, and the speakers will include representatives of the Borough Council, Chamber of Commerce, and the railway lessees. The Taranaki United Fire Brigades' Association will hold a big demonstration here on Thursday, and, provided the weather conditions are favorable, it should be a thorough success. The public will bo admitted free, and afternoon tea will be procurable on the ground. The schools in the Stratford district will not reopen until March 1. On February 19th, the schools will be re-opening, and the kiddies are now preparing to resume their* lessons, after the long holiday they have had. The selection of school requirements is an important matter, and wise parents will make a point of inspecting the full stock at H. J. Hopkins', bookseller and stationer, Broadway. Here they will find everything the kiddies require, and always at the lowest possible price. It's time to have that long-promised portrait taken. No need to wait for a fine day.
