NATIONAL WAR MEMORIAL. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Feb. 17. , The National War Memorial Committee has decided that the site for the memorial shall be in Wellington. The committee at presents consists of Sir James Allen, Hon. B. J. G. Coatea, Dr Pomare, Messrs C. J. Parr, J." P. Luke, L. M. Isitt, W. Downie Stewart, T. E. Y. Seddon, and E. Newman. It was agreed to strengthen the committee by four members to be nominated by the Mayor of Wellington. The details are not yet decided, hut it is possible that competitive designs may be called for from architects and artists. CLAIM FOR COMPENSATION. Auckland, Feb. 17. In the Supreme Court the jury awarded tlie widow of a watersider, named Walter Bedford, who fell down the hatchway of the Ayrshire last year, £ISOO damages against A. H. Nathan, Ltd., agents for the vessel. A nonsuit on law points has yet to be decided. WELLINGTON GAS COMPANY. Wellington, Feb. 17. Referring to the competition with municipal trading concerns he stated that the position was getting worse every year. Last year the company paid £20.000 in rates and taxes, and the Auckland Company £30,000. If the Christelmrch company paid ns much as Wellington, this meant that municipal trading concerns were subsidised by the State to the extent, of £70,000 by the three leading gas companies alone.'
