_ Mr- S. G. Smith, M.P., leaves for Wellington this morning to join -he Parliamentary party for Samoa. Mr. Justice Cooper, who has been visiting Eltham, was a passenger for Auckland by the Rarawa last night. He was accompanied by his son, Dr. Cooper, of Eltham. The appointment of Mr. M. N- Bums as registrar of births, deaths, and marriages and vaccination inspector for the district of Inglewood is gazetted Mr. A. >ll. Fletcher, deputy' Registrar of Deeds, and Mr. C. L. L. Harney have been appointed Assistant Land Registrars at Auckland under the Land Transfer Act. Mr. Hansen was, on Thursday, formally re-appointed engineer to the Waimate West County Council. He has sufficiently recovered from his recent revere illness as to be able to take up his duties again. , The Commission that, is to inquire regarding trade between New Zealand and the Pacific Islands consists of Messrs ft. Elliott (Auckland), W- ft. Pearson (Timaru) and T. Wilson (Wellington). —Press Association. Mr. S. I'. Blanch, headmaster of Christ's College, has tendered his resignation to take effect from .Tan.iary 31st next (says a, telegram from Christehurcli). Mr. Blanch intends to retire from active work in his profession. Mr- James A. Cassidy, the well known Christehiirch barrister and solicitor, died suddenly yesterday afternoon (says a telegram from Christehureh). Mr. Cassidy was in his fifty-third year, and had been ailing for some time, but he had continued to attend to his practice. He leaves a widow and a daughter of 14 years.
