SCHEME FOR IMPROVEMENTS. | CONFERENCE OVER PLANS. „ . The comprehensive scheme of improvements it is proposed to carry out in connection with tho Hawera railway station was advanced a further stage yesterday, when a conference was held at tLe Borough Council Chambers, Hawera, between Messrs Harris, district traffic manager, and Kocii, district engineer, representing the Department, and representatives of local bodies in ilawera, and the proposed plans and suggested alterations were discussed. Mr. E. Dixon (Mayor of Hawera) presided, and there were also present: Crs. Reid, Osborne, Lewis, Hayton and Cameron (Borough Council), Crs. J. ~ii■ Murdoch (chairman), R. J. Linn (Hawera County Council), Messrs M. J. Lynskey (president), R. Sage, (secretary), E. H. Ilarrop, R, Cummings, j. A. Duffill, W. S. Gibson (Chambpr of Commerce), and Mr. Murray, chairman of the Town Planning and Beautifyiug Association. In formally introducing Messrs Harris and Koch, tho chairman said that since the officials were in Hawera discus- | sing the matter,«representatives of the ! Borough Council, County Council, Chamber of Commerce and Town Planning J Association had met on the ground, j There was a large attendance, and, as was only to lie expected, a large number of suggestions had been made. The committee liad inet that morning and picked out the cream of the suggestions, which would be submitted that afternoon.
Cr. J. C. Cameron, formerly borough engineer, submitted a plan showing some suggested alterations, the principal of which provided for the station being on the Glover Road side of the line, instead of ou the other aide as suggested* also for a subway from Argyle Street, instead of from Wilson and Campbell Roads. r
Mf. Murray,, suggested that instead of a new road, which would necessitate a cutting being made off the Glover Road to the proposed station, that a chain find a . half street be formed running jn a sweep from Wilson Street and Campbell Road, leaving room for beautifying the approach to the station,/and Making provision for a footway, ao that pedestrians would have a safe road clear of other traffic.
