HIGHER PAY WANTED.
APPLICATIONS TO THE COURT. "DEMANDS NOT UNREASONABLE," By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Applications for amended awards ta give increased wages were made by q number of Unions before the Arbitra« tion Court. The Private Hotel Workers' Union asked for ten shillings a week increase In all wages. The President of the Court, Mr. Justice Stringer, said tho war legislation would not enable the Court to make any such award. Increases bad to be based on the increased cost of living. In the case of the Brewery Employees' l-nion, he said that immediately after the last award was granted tho brewers put •up tho price of bottled beer a shilling pei dozen. ■ In the course of discussion, Jilr. Justice Stringer said it appeared that various sections of tho workers were exploiting one another. The Union contended that most miserable wages wow benig paid by one of the most lucrativ< businesses in tho Dominion. He express' ed the opinion that the application was not unreasonable in this and all the other cases. Decision was reserved.
