THE SUMMER MEETING. j RECORD OPENING DAY. TAIAMAI WINS THE CUP. OFFICIALS. President, K. H. Nolan; Vice-Presldtmt, J. Gray. Stewards: President, Vice-Presi-dent, Hon. Treasurer, Messrs. VV. C. Adamson, K. Hicks, H. Spratt, S. Adamson, Jun., O. Larccun, C. H. Washer, A. Good, C. H. F. Macpherson, W. 0. Williams, W. Good, C. J. Preston. Judicial Committee: 8. Adamson, J. Gray, A. Good, B. Hicks, e. H. Washer. Starter, C. O'Connor; Clerk ot Course, T. C. Sutherland; Clerk of Scales, P. W. Sutton; Assistant Clerk of Scales, P. Eastbury; Handlcapper, H. Coyle; Timekeeper, T. F. Goddard; Judge, J. Cameron; Hon. Surgeons, Drs. J. McGhie and W. M. Thomson; Hon. Vet. Surgeon, Major Neale; Hon. Treasurer, F. G. Klmbell; Secretary, V. B. Stratton. The opening day of the Egmont Racing Club's summer meeting took place at Ha wera yesterday in.ideal weather conditions, the day being warm and sunny, tempered by a mild breeze. There was a very large attendance, the gate takings, despite the issue of a very largely increased number of complimentary tickets, being quite equal to those of any previous year. Racing throughout was of a decidedly interesting order, the fields being good and the finishes generally very dose. The fact that the winners were well concealed, only three favorites passing the post first during the day, was a tribute to the work of the handicapper (Mr. Coyle).
Eleven horses saddled up for the principal event of the day, and it is questionable if a better quality field has ever'contested a handicap race in Taranaki. It was no surprise to find that the totalisator showed a record betting race for Taranaki. Kilmoon was made favorite. The favorite, however, could get no closer than second, the little fancied Taiamai leading from end to end.
The big sprint race went to the favorite Sasanof, who was ridden a fine race by H. Gray. The classic event, the Egmont Stakes, produced a field of five. The New Plymouth mare, Silver Link, was made the hottest order of the day, but had to lower her colors to Mr. W. G. Stead's three year old Surveyor. The totalisator staff under Mr. O'Callaghan, had a wry T>usv time, and despite "the fact that the totalisator had been enlarged by the addition of four receiving and six pay-out windows, a good deal of money was shut out. The investments for the day totalled £42,001. as compared with £32,<)78 10s for the first day of last year, an increase of £9,022 10s. In order to avoid congestion at the totalisator the Club has this year cut out the Ms totalisator, hut, this is only a temporary expedient! as when the ne.r totalisator—part of the comprehensive scheme of improve, raents—is erected, provision will be made for the small investor.
The course and its appointments were in splendid order, and Mr. A. Morse, the Cluli'fi custodian, came in for many compliments from visiting owners and trainers upon the state of the turf The arrangements for the meeting were splendid: though there was some delay in starting some of the races The result was that the last race was run about three quarters of an hour late, after the special train for the South had left. This was not owing to any undue delay at the barrier, as Mr C. O'Connor got his fields awav promptly Mr, C. Cameron, in the judge's box, hoisted his decisions promptly. Mr! McMahon, stipendiary steward, was present, but his task proved a sinecure, there, bein? no enouiries whatever. Mr! v. B. Stratton made an efficient secretary He was assisted by an able set of officials.
The Hawjra Citigens* Band, under the baton of Mr. E. H. Gould, rendered an eniovable programme in front of the grand stand,. The catering was done by Dustins', IM-, of Wangßmii. Movement increased his lead, and passed the stand several lengths clear of Endure. Then came Explorer and Zola. Round the back, Zola moved into third position, and a little later Master Moutoa put in a challenge, and Movement, making a faulty jump at the last fence, Master Moutoa entered the straight in the lead, and in the run home secured the verdict by two lengths from Ngakanui, who beat Movement by four lengths.
