WORKERS' HOUSES.
LOAN FOR EGMONT COUNTY. INDUCEMENT TO PRESERVE HOMES. Notification was received by the Egmont County Council at yesterday's meeting that the Government had approved of a loan of £SOOO for the provision of workers' houses'. The chairman remarked that the problem now before the Council was to expend the £so as to provide houses for the men throughout the County. Cr, Green considered that the Council should fix the rents. He held that 10 per cent should be charged to cover I maintenance, depreciation, etc. The opinion was expressed that the rent should be at least 15s per week. Cr. Young pointed out that they must take into consideration the fact that the houses were to be occupied by their own men. It was finally resolved to charge 8 per cent, on the money, that is, 103 per week. It was also resolved, on the motion of Councillors Green and Young, that when the houses are built they he inspected annually by the riding member and engineer, and a portion of the rent will be remitted to tenants in cases where the houses require 110 repairs. The allocation of the £.IOOO was left till next meeting, and in the meantime the chairman will submit a report at next meeting-
