BIRTHS AND DEATHS.
STATISTICS FOR BRITAIN*. MARKED IMPROVEMENT SHOWN. The IJegistrar-General lias a much cheerier report to make of the September quarter's bills of mortality than for a long time past, writes a correspondent from London. Births registered in England and Wales during the three months ended September 30 were' 175,367, and deaths were 59,112. There were 26,543 more births than in the preceding quarter, and 0910 bob than in the third quarter of 1918. The rate was 18.5 per 1000. Males numbered 00,101 and females 55,206. Male births were to female births as 1050 to 1000. The average proportion for ten years in the. third quarter is 10-U. Deaths were 1f1,34S fewer than in the preceding quarter, and 25,100 fewer than in the third qnartej of 191 S. Civilian deaths were 10.1 per 1000. Infant mortality, measured hy the proportion of deaths under one year to registered births, was equal to 70 per 1000, being 34 per 1000 below the, average in the ten preceding third quarters, and the lowest recorded rate for any quarter of the year. In the United Kingdom 106,191 births and 145,912 deaths were registered for the second quarter endiing June.. The natural increase of population was, therefore, 00,1i70.
The number of persons married in the United Kingdom in the second quarter was 238,018. Of these, 202,142 were married in England and Wales, an increase of 81,800 over the number in the preceding quarter, and 87,902 more than in the second quarter of 1918.
