ROAD OR RAILWAY.

WAITARA-TE KUITI CONNECTION CLIFTON COUNTY COUNCIL DISCUSSION. The proposed Waitara-Te Kuiti railway came up before the Clifton County Council on Friday, when a letter was received from Mr. W. T. Jennings, M.P, who, in acknowledging receipt of communications fi'om the council oil the subject, said that when the Hon. R. McKenzie was Minister of Public Works, a trial survey was made. His recollection was that the survey went on to Mokau, and then stopped. Another survey was made from Te Kuiti, down to Mokauiti to Ohura, with the intention of coming out near Marton. This was also abandoned. This survey was carried out by Donkin and Hurstliouse and others about thirty years ago. If a new route had been discovered, he would be glad to assist in getting a survey. In his opinion the most important work at present was the metalling of Mt. Messenger, the bridging of the Mokau river somewhere at the junction of the main road between Awakino and Mokau, and the pushing on of the road pastKotare into Waitaanga, so as to tap the Ohura. He also forwarded \ letter from the Hpn. Sir W. Fraser, Minister of Public Works, stating that the Council's suggestion re the proposed Waitara-Te Kuiti railway would receive due consideration. The clerk of the Waitomo County Council had unanimously decided to approve 0 of the proposed railway. Cr. Jones said he did not think there would be any difficulty in tunnelling the hills if they went up the Mangatoro Valley. However, he hoped the Minister of Public Works would authorise the survey. It only required the Waitara Borough Council to support the scheme. If a railway was pushed through metal could he sent in to metal Mt. Messenger, which, he considered, would be the only hope of metalling the mountain. The engineer said they would have to wait for metal Jor a long time if thev waited for the railway. In the course of a brief discussion the opinion was expressed that no metal would Ije placed on Mt. Messenger this summer.
