SWIMMING TEST.
NEW PLYMOUTH GIRL'S SUCCESS. A New Plymouth girl, Miss Marjorie Sladden, last night won the Award of Merit of the Royal Life Saving Society after a splendid exhibition at the Municipal Baths. Misfi Sladden gained $5 marks out of a possible hundred, comfortably exceeding the required per centage to pass. This iR the second highest honor that swimmers can receive. In order to win the Award of Merit Miss Sladden had to (1) s-jvim 18 lengths of the Baths (1100 yards) fully clothed, with the exception of hoots (six lengths trudgeon, six breast, and six back stroke); (2) undress in the water; (3) do two dives, one not exceeding sft., and one not exceeding ]fift.; (4) plunge 35 feet; (.">) bring in a fully clothed drowning person from 25 yards out: and (fi) bring up an object in 5 feet of water. Miss Sladden accomplished all the tests. In the" plunge fdie did 42 feet, though only 35 feet were required.
