NEW PLYMOUTH SOCIAL NEWS. THE RACES. The great attraction of the week naturally was the Races, and, although the attendance was not so good as at Christmas, there was a largo crowd on both days, visitors coming from all parts of the district. There is no dourit that on a fine day the Racecourse is one of the beauty spots of Taranaki- For the two days the weather was glorious, so the grounds, studded with flower beds, looked at their best, and the effect was enhanced by the many colored frocks worn by the ladies. A WELCOMK HOME Airs. Courtney gave a most, delightful afternoon ten at her residence in York Terrace last Tuesday, as a "Welcome Home" to Mrs. G. Home and Mrs. Brewster. who have recently, returned from England. During the afternoon a golf croquet competition occupied 1 lie attention of the guests, Archdeacon Evans and Mrs. Hutchen winning the prizes. Afternoon tea was served under ihe trees. Mrs. Courtney received her guests in a charming frock of smoked grey silk poplin, hat to match. Mrs. Home wore grey crepe de chine, navy hat, with white ostrich marabout. WEDDING AT OPUNAKE. A pretty wedding took place -at St. Barn ado'; Church, Opifnake, on February 4, when Miss Margery Chambers, cldor daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. L. i r . Chambers, was married to Mr. Arthur Joseph McEldowney, soil of Mr. John McEldowney, of Wellington. The bride, who was given away by her father, looked charming in a beautifully hand-em-broidered dress of cream crepe anglais. Tlie veil of beautiful laee was an heirloom lent by Mrs. S- Feave'. It had first been worn in the Napoleonic courts. A shower bouquet of white roses, English clematis, hyacinth and candicans, was carried. The bridesmaids, Miss Isabel Chambers and Miss "Eileen McEldowney, wore periwinkle blue crepe de chine dresses and large picture hats of burnt straw, trimmbd with yellow daisies and blue ribbon, and carried bouquets of blue agapanthus, montbretias, and tiger lillies. The best man was Mr. Donald Scott, of Wellington, and the groomsman Mr. I<aur,ence Chambers. The church was prettily decorated by friends of the bride. The bouquets were made and presented by Mr. B. A. Layard, of Pungarehu. After the ceremony Mrs. Chambers entertained the guests at afternoon tea at her home, Te Namu road. WEDDING AT KAIMATA. A very pretty wedding was solemnised at the residence of Mr. John G. Martin, of Kaimata, when Mr. George Peters was married to Miss Ida Martin. The officiating clergyman was the Rev. G. Ireland. Mr. L. Bocock acted as best man, while Miss May Martin, sister of the bride, wa3 bridesmaid. Both bride and bridegroom are well known in the Kaimata and Inglewood districts, and have the best wishes of large circle of friends.
