ELTHAM.
(From Our Own Correspondent). .Feb. 5. Met Lieut. Haslidt in town Yesterday. Efe was formerly employed as clerk in the Box Factory a!nd joined up at the first call, leaving with. the Main Body. As tlu r:- -,va= no final leave in those times this the first we have seen of him, since 1914. .Mr. J. Ballantyne and his son Roy left Eltham yesterday for a trip to the Waikato. They nave taken up some of the Piako land. An old identity in the person of Mrs. R. Quarrell died at Ngaere to-day. The deceased, who had reached the age of 80 years, had been ailing for some considerable i.imi'. The bras.-s hard is putting in a lot of practice. Some of the younger members go along nearly every night. Now the band room is near two lodge rooms, one of which is used as a church, and the preacher complains that it is awkward at times to cvi-v on to the accompaniment of rag time. But the climax came when the secretary of one lodge wrote asking the hand to give way on Tuesday as "the noise" interfered with their meeting. Both th" Foresters and Druids had 20od attendances at their meetings held last night. The business with the AO.F. was finance in regard to a hall, and a scheme was drawn up which should very shortly, and, as they always do things intend to hold a "welcqjne home" social to Bro. E. Parrott. who is expected shortly, and as they always do things well, it is hound to be a success.
