Mr. Forsyth and Mr. Marx were passengers by the mail train from Eltham yesterday for Wellington, where they will attend the Dairymen's Conference. Advice was received in Hawera yesterday (reports the Star) of the death at Wellington of Mrs. A. Jury, formerly licensee of the Egmout Hotel. Mr. Matarea Taurua, a student of Dunholm College, has come to the Hawera district (states vhe Star) to lu-sist Rev- R. Haddon in the work of the West Coast Maori Mission.
A visitor to Hawera just now is Mrs, C. E. Major, who, while her husband >vas ui public life, was prominent in all Hawera activities. Her many old friends are glad to see and welcome her—Star-
At the Feilding Show, which opened on Tuesday, Mr. A. H. Street, of Bell Block, acted as judge of Friesians, and Mr. F. Randford, of Stratford, adjucicated on the Jerseys.
Mr. Alexander Stewart Boyd, the wellknown artist and illustration contributor to Punch and several London papevs, is at present visiting Auckland- Mr. Boyd is a member of the Royal Scottish Water Color Society. Mr. H. ffyrni Kirkby, of New Plymouth, who arrived by the Ruapehu from England, has arrived in New Plymouth. Mr. Kirkby served throughout the war with the navy and the JRoyal Naval Brigade.
Professor Gilray, who suddenly collapsed over the reading desk, and died almost before he could be removed to an ante-room, at Dunedin on Monday, held the Chair of English Language and Literature in the Otago University. He was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland, in 1851, and was educated at the High School of Edinburgh, where he gained 28 prizes, as well as the Carson medal for the best essay on Life and Poetry," and the medal for being dux of the whole school in English. At the Edinburgh University he attained his M.A. degree, with honors in classics, the Greek Travelling Fellowship, and other high educational distinctions. He subsequently studied at Berlin and Heidelberg Universities, ahd, after holding various appointments at universities in Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Dundee, he was in 188!) appointed Professor of English Language and Literature at Otago University—a position which he has filled with distinction ever since. The records of the New Zealand University Calendar show that many of hjis students have taken Senior and Tinline scholarships and the degree of M.A. with Honors in English,
