NO SUGAR IN SYDNEY. By Telegiapli.—Prtu Assn.—Copyright. Sydney, Feb. 3. i Owing to the shortage of sugar none is available for jam and consequently there is a plethora of fruit in the city. The council licensed a large number of I harrow-men to sell in the streets and thns afford people cheap fruit, which would otherwise be sent to the dump. AUSTRALIAN AIR DEFENCE. Sydney, Feb. 3. After extensive inquiries in reference to Commonwealth air defence, General Legge has recommended the establishment of sixteen squadrons of 25 planes each, two flying boat squadrons, 200 large passenger planes for commercial use, a central flying school, and from tpn to twelve aerodromes. General Legge also advocates an establishment for the manufacture of engines and metal parts and planes. The capital expenditure is estimated at one and a half millions, and the annual upkeep at one million.—Aus-! If J!. Cable Assn.' j j A SEVERE EARTHQUAKE. Received Feb. 3, 10.20 p.m. Sydney, Feb. 3. The severest earthquake since May, 1919, was recorded last night, possibly originating in the vicinity of the islands north of Australia.
