WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Feb. 3. . On Friday and Saturday evenings last week, the town bridge was a scene of some excitement, some competitions being got off bv the Clifton Rowing Club. On Friday the following crews were engaged:—O. J. McKoy (stroke), R. Baker, St. George and Gollop met J Bayly (strike), S. Crow, G. Skelton, and G. Jupp. The -first-named crew won easily. On Saturday evening tlie winners rowed Matangi (stroke), Kepa, L. Sampson, and C. Horsup. This was a particularly good race. Matangi had the advantage up to the freezing works wharf, when MeKoy challenged and went ahead, winning by half a length. It is hoped next year will see the old Regatta resuscitated.
The adjourned meeting of the Borough Council was held on Friday evening, when Thursday was settled as the half-holiday. Mr. W. Lennox was appointed to a junior position at the power house. Mr. Edward Jury received word on Monday evening that his mother had died [suddenly at Wellington. Mrs. Jury was $ W vaara n/rq Uw Club
Hotel, Waitara, and was much esteemed by those who knew her Sympathy will be felt for those left behind.
On Monday evening the local Druids held a meeting, when two new membeTS were Initiated, end Ave proposed. The Lodge is forging ahead in the matter of its membership. After the business was tansacted, a lecture was given on "Stonehenge and Its Sacred Rites," by Bro. Limmer. Songs were also contributed. Theatre-goers are being well catered for this week, every night this week being taken up. The "Merry Musical Maoris" had a fair house last evening. A very pretty wedding was solemnized at St. John's Church on Tuesday, the contracting parties being Mr. Walter Baird, son of Mr. Baird, of Masterton, and Miss Hilda Berntsen, daughter of Mr. 0. Berntsen, of Waitara. The bride, who was fiven away by her father, wore a dress of handsome whin? crepe-de-chene with over dress of net, and wore the usual veil and orange blossoms, and carried a shower bouquet of white flowers. Mr. Hugh Bradbury, cousin of the bride, acted as best man. The bridesmaid, Miss Olga Bernsten, sister of the bride, was dressed in white crepe-de-chine and wore a black hat relieved with pink, and carried) a bouquet of pink nweet peas and maiden hair fern. Mr. Walter Baird is second engineer at the Works. The bride was a member of the office staff of Messrs Bortlnvick.
Whilst getting an empty barge into position for loading a native, named Dick Preston, of Bell Block, fell down the hold.
